At the end of February and beginning of March, life slowly but surely begins to pulsate again everywhere. The first birds return from the wintering grounds and the males of the meadow birds, such as the Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus), the Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa) or the Eurasian Curlew (Numenius arquata), try to impress the females and their competitors with their courtship displays. The rituals are easily observed in wide open wet meadows.
The jubilant song oft he Sky Lark (Alauda arvensis) can now also be heard louder over the meadows. Spring can begin!
Lapwings are widespread on migration all over Germany and can be photographed quite well from the car. Likewise the Black-tailed Godwit, but it has become quite rare inland. The coastal wetlands in Germany and Holland offer some good opportunities.
The first splashes of color can now also be found in the forests. Early bloomers such as Liverworts (Hepatica nobilis) and Snowflakes (Leucojum vernum), but also Wood Anemones (Anemone nemorosa) and Wild Garlic (Allium ursinum) thrive in the herbaceous layer of deciduous forests. When the sun penetrates through the still bare branches in March and warms the forest floor, the early bloomers sprout. They bloom after a few days and wither again in a short time. Their cycle must be completed before the trees sprout their leaves, depriving them of light and water. That’s why there isn’t much time to photograph the first spots of color on the forest floor.
