Temminck Sunbird Female in Trus Madi Forest Reserve

The red flowers of a hibiscus are worth a photo alone. All the nicer if you can “garnish” the strange flowers with a few species of birds. In any case, a hibiscus bush, perhaps the species Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, particularly attracted the sunbirds. It was located directly behind the washrooms of the Borneo Jungle Girls Camp in the mountains of Borneo. Of the Temminck Sunbirds (Aethopyga temminckii), pictures of the beautiful males with their scarlet breasts and blue-purple stripes on the sides of the crown are usually preferred. But here it was particularly important to me to have good, meaningful photos of the female. These are often neglected by photographers, but are often particularly valuable for ornithological documentation. The female has an inconspicuous gray head with a narrow white eye ring. The upper surface is olive green overall. The only thing that is striking is the female’s tail, which is also olive-colored overall, but has a warm gold-olive to copper-red edge.

During our stay in the hills and mountains of Borneo, ranging from Mount Kinabalu to the Kelabit Chain, but particularly in the Crocker Range in the Trus Madi Forest Reserve, we saw these pretty Sunbirds, often together with Pygmy White-eyes (Heleia squamifron), White-bellied Erpornis (Erpornis zantholeuca) and Chestnut-crested Yuhinas (Staphida everetti), almost daily.

After countless shots in the low light of the jungle of Bulwer’s Pheasant (Lophura bulweri), Bornean Banded Pitta Eventually (Hydrornis schwaneri) and the Dayak Blue Flycatcher (Cyornis montanus), some images of birds in the open were more than welcome.

In order to meet the growing demand for top images of the rarer species of Palaearctic Bird-lens.com has specifically made trips to remote places. Additionally every chance is used, if a rare bird is around the homeground. This to do everything to ensure excellent photos of the Birds of the Western Palearctic. The yield of pictures also of rare Western Palaearctic birds is very good. There are other nice images of birds, that you will find behind the tab “Picture Shop“. Just give a notice if you need a picture of a bird which is not online.
